How this calculator works

Use the existing earnings and federal calculation controls. Enter New York State withholding in State withholding. Enter the applicable NYC withholding plus any other actual payroll levies in Local taxes / other state payroll levies. Both amount fields require an explicit entry, including zero where appropriate. Keep the city and other levy breakdown separately for the generator.

Example calculation

Arithmetic illustration only: the default biweekly $2,000 federal estimate leaves $1,690.85. Hypothetical New York State withholding of $100, NYC withholding of $60 and other levies of $10 produce $1,520.85 net. Enter $70 in the combined local/other field, and keep the $60/$10 breakdown in your records. These are example inputs, not estimated city tax rates.

2026 methodology & assumptions

For regular U.S. employee wages with a 2020-or-later W-4. This estimate uses 52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 semi-monthly or 12 monthly pay periods. Federal withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T Worksheet 1A. Amounts are rounded to cents.

Social Security uses a $184,500 wage limit and 6.2% employee rate; Medicare uses 1.45%. Additional Medicare withholding is 0.9% on wages above $200,000 paid by the same employer, regardless of filing status. Enter year-to-date taxable wages before this paycheck to model those thresholds.

California uses EDD Method B annualization, including DE 4 allowances and 1.3% uncapped SDI. Period-specific tables may differ slightly because of rounding. Supplemental wages, nonresident-alien adjustments, self-employment tax, local taxes, special exemptions, and multi-state allocation are not automatically modeled. Overtime is not automatically treated as tax-free.

NYC residency is a distinct review

New York City resident withholding has its own publication. A city work address is not a substitute for checking residence. New York’s nonresident FAQ states that NYC nonresidents are not liable for NYC personal income tax; read the official guidance for your circumstances before entering a city amount. New York nonresident and NYC FAQ.

Use the city publication for the city amount

The 2026 NYC resident withholding publication is separate from New York State withholding tables. This interface accepts amounts you supply and does not implement either table, determine residence, or resolve a change of residence. 2026 NYC withholding tables.

Do not lose the breakdown

The calculator has one combined local/other field. If it contains city tax and another employee payroll levy, retain the individual amounts in your worksheet. When creating a statement, review each line separately so that an insurance or family-leave deduction is not mislabeled as city income tax.

NYC paycheck review workflow

  1. Confirm the employee’s relevant residence and pay period.
  2. Obtain the state and city withholding amounts for that period.
  3. Enter other applicable employee levies once.
  4. Review federal estimates and benefits assumptions.
  5. Reconcile net pay, copy the summary and enter accurate details in the generator.
