How it works

Annual salary divided by paid weeks and working hours gives the hourly equivalent. Monthly and pay-period values are annual averages. A working week can differ from an annual-average week when there is unpaid leave.

Example

$52,000 across 52 weeks and 40 hours per week equals $25 per hour.

Questions about this tool

How should I account for unpaid weeks?

Salary-to-hourly examples for a 40-hour week

Hourly equivalent = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year). With 40 hours and 52 paid weeks, the denominator is 2,080 hours. These are gross-pay comparisons, before taxes and deductions.

Illustrative conversions using 40 hours per week and 52 paid weeks per year
Annual salary Hourly equivalent
$40,000 $19.23
$52,000 $25.00
$60,000 $28.85
$75,000 $36.06

Values are rounded to the nearest cent. Change the calculator's hours and paid weeks to match your comparison instead of assuming every job uses 2,080 hours.

How hours and unpaid weeks change the comparison

At $52,000 and 52 paid weeks, 40 hours per week gives $25.00 per hour; 35 hours gives about $28.57. If $52,000 is the total actually paid across 50 paid weeks at 40 hours, the equivalent is $26.00. Keep annual pay and paid weeks consistent. Do not remove paid vacation weeks as though they were unpaid.

What the result tells you

This is a schedule-based comparison, not take-home pay or a determination of an overtime rate. Benefits, bonuses and taxes can change the value or net amount of compensation. Monthly and biweekly figures are annual averages, not a promise of a particular paycheck amount.

Annual salary also differs from earnings already paid this year. See what YTD means on a pay stub and how hourly and salary pay stubs differ when checking your payroll records.
