How this calculator works

Choose frequency, earnings and federal W-4 inputs. Keep Other state selected and enter the actual New York State withholding for this pay period. Include applicable local tax and other payroll levies in the separate field, without also counting them as post-tax deductions. Review retirement and benefits treatment against your payroll records.

Example calculation

Arithmetic illustration, not a New York tax-table result: the existing default biweekly $2,000 federal estimate leaves $1,690.85 before state/local amounts. Entering hypothetical state withholding of $100 and other payroll levies of $10 gives $1,580.85 net. Replace those entries with your actual amounts.

2026 methodology & assumptions

For regular U.S. employee wages with a 2020-or-later W-4. This estimate uses 52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 semi-monthly or 12 monthly pay periods. Federal withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T Worksheet 1A. Amounts are rounded to cents.

Social Security uses a $184,500 wage limit and 6.2% employee rate; Medicare uses 1.45%. Additional Medicare withholding is 0.9% on wages above $200,000 paid by the same employer, regardless of filing status. Enter year-to-date taxable wages before this paycheck to model those thresholds.

California uses EDD Method B annualization, including DE 4 allowances and 1.3% uncapped SDI. Period-specific tables may differ slightly because of rounding. Supplemental wages, nonresident-alien adjustments, self-employment tax, local taxes, special exemptions, and multi-state allocation are not automatically modeled. Overtime is not automatically treated as tax-free.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate New York withholding tables?

No. It uses the unchanged federal engine and manually entered state and local amounts. Use current New York guidance or your employer’s payroll record for those amounts.

Where does Paid Family Leave go?

Enter an applicable employee payroll levy in the local/other payroll field. Do not enter it again as a post-tax deduction. Eligibility, limits and YTD contribution history are not calculated by this tool.

What about NYC or Yonkers?

Review the applicable city treatment separately. Use the NYC experience for a clearer city-versus-state breakdown; this tool does not determine residence or automatically calculate city withholding.

Separate federal and New York withholding

New York publishes state and city withholding methods separately. The state tables were revised for payrolls beginning January 1, 2026. This page is a manual reconciliation experience, not a new implementation of those tables. Use the correct period and current instructions when obtaining your state amount. New York withholding publications.

Keep payroll levies distinct from income tax

Paid Family Leave can create an employee deduction. The Workers’ Compensation Board specifies a 2026 rate and annual contribution limit for covered employees. This calculator does not track coverage or that contribution cap; enter the applicable actual deduction rather than relying on a flat assumed percentage. 2026 Paid Family Leave update.

Review the correct jurisdiction

A New York employer address alone does not resolve every residence or work-location question. Obtain the state and any city amounts from the relevant payroll records. Keep each item’s label in your own records even if several levies are combined in this tool’s local/other field.

Before creating the document

  1. Check the dates and employee earnings.
  2. Enter state withholding from the same period.
  3. Enter applicable city and other levies once.
  4. Reconcile gross minus taxes and employee deductions to net.
  5. Copy the summary and review all values in the existing generator.
