Calculate overtime earnings and total gross pay for a pay period. Enter regular hours and overtime hours separately, then choose the applicable multiplier.
How this calculator works
Overtime hourly rate equals regular rate × multiplier. Multiply that rate by overtime hours, then add regular earnings. Effective hourly earnings divide total gross earnings by all hours worked. This tool calculates an amount; it does not decide which hours qualify for overtime.
Example calculation
For 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours at $20 per hour with a 1.5× multiplier, regular earnings are $800, the overtime rate is $30 and overtime earnings are $150. Gross earnings total $950, or $21.11 per hour across all 45 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Does every employee qualify for time-and-a-half?
No. Eligibility and required rates can depend on classification, jurisdiction, occupation and the work arrangement. Confirm the applicable rules before choosing hours and a multiplier.
Is overtime excluded from payroll taxes?
Do not assume so. Eligible federal income-tax deductions and payroll withholding are different. The paycheck calculator does not automatically remove overtime from taxable wages; any applicable W-4 adjustment must be supplied.
