How it works
The regular Schedule SE method generally uses 92.35% of positive net profit, with the $400 net-earnings threshold. Social Security is capped after your own W-2 Social Security wages. Additional Medicare uses your filing threshold and combined Medicare wages (including spouse wages for joint filers). Federal and state income taxes, optional SE methods and special cases are excluded.
Example
$50,000 annual profit with no W-2 wages gives $46,175 SE earnings: $5,725.70 Social Security and $1,339.08 Medicare, totaling $7,064.78.
